Our Elders are eager to serve the church and to use their spiritual gifts, abilities, and expertise to love God, love people, and reach the world in Jesus’ name. They do not serve as lords over the congregation. They are always available to anyone in the Church who has needs and questions.
“Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church, praying and fasting as they entrusted them to the Lord, in whom they had believed. Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.” Acts 14:23
The Elders meet regularly to pray for the church and make decisions on matters of budget, personnel, organization, building, expansion, legal matters, doctrinal issues, capital expenditures, and any other issues pertaining to the church. They also have committees for consultation and counsel that work with them when called upon – such as the Finance Committee, LIFT Leaders, church Trustees and various Ministry Leaders as different needs dictate.
“Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock.” 1 Peter 5:1-3
The Elders qualifications are listed in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. The Elder Council reviews, interviews and selects the Elders after this process.
